This Ring

I wear this ring of gold around my neck,
For now it is the closest thing to you.
Never wear gold but for you what the heck?
Turning into a real man, I always knew.

I miss you more than you could ever know.
You are growing up, making us so proud,
So brave, you have no idea, letting go.
At graduation, I'll be cheering so loud.

You are becoming stronger by the day,
Life for you will become so much better.
Keep following your orders and obey,
And I will keep to writing you letters.

I'm counting down the days we meet again,
For now little brother, continue to gain.

The Match That Changed Everything.

There they stood with hatred glowing in their eyes.
One boxer-never backing down, always ready to fight,
The other- lacked confidence, unable to defend herself.

The living room became a boxing ring.
One verbal jab after another.
Unable to pick a corner,
We coward away.

He threw the final blow and the bell sounded.
She was down for the count.
However, neither boxer won,
The two audience members did not cheer.
They were left speechless, their world had been turned upside down.

After that, they never attended another boxing match.
It was too painful to watch,
Too many painful memories surrounded them.
They would never be the same again.

What is the Meaning of Poetry?-Ars Poetica

Today a poem should be read while-
When you are still,
No thoughts to interrupt you,
In peace and harmony with oneself.

A poem should be painted in-
Your mind, your thoughts, your feelings.
Your desires, hopes, dreams.

A poem should talk about-
Love, controversy
Hate, fears
War, happiness
Desires, despair
What your actions say, but your mouth doesn't.

A poem should infiltrate-
Peace for others,
Safety, a place of acceptance.

A poem would've done something-
It would've made someone stronger,
Defend others,
Fight for what is right.

Some people know how to-
Hurt others,
Love others,
Face their fears,
Feel confident,
Be a leader.

My words-
Are simple like the sky is blue, the grass is green.
Without much thinking-
You get it.

Once-
When children played with their cell phones, Ipods, and video games,
People didn't have time to stop to think about life,
When they only cared about money,
When we fought for power,
Poetry wasn't poetry.

It was just another way,
To escape the harsh world we all seem to live in.

Six Word Story

"I've fallen in love with you"

I heard the beats, I listened to the notes, and I fell in love with you. My foot started thumping and my fingers started tapping. I felt free, even invicible as I danced by myself. I listened to every word. I skipped diner just so I could have that few extra minutes to cherish every syllable, every rythym, every verse. It allowed me to relive the good times and forget the bad. I went to bed that night unable to sleep. I was too excited. I could not wait for the next time I could listen again. I will never forget the first time I fell in love with music.

Writer's Post 10/3

This week I chose to talk about the poem "I Give You Back" by Joy Harjo. I read each poem and short story this week, but Harjo's writing left an impression on me. As you read this poem it seems that the author is talking about letting go of fear, but fear of what. It appears that a person's life as been turned upside down by outsiders invading her home. This poem goes deeper than leaving a fear. It talks about letting go of anything that is holding you back. You become one with your fear and you need to just let it go so that you can go on with your own life. One line in the poems states "I release you. you were my beloved and hated twin, but now, I don't know you as myself." This shows that when you hold onto such an intense fear it really turns you into a person you don't necessarily want to be. It can ruin your life.

"I Give You Back" is a dark piece. Harjo talks about soldiers burning her home down, killing her children, raping her siblings, and starving her people. It is not an easy thing to talk about and share with others. This can positively and negatively affect her work. For some, this kind of writing is too gruesome to read. It is so depressing and upsetting. However, you really get deep into someone else's life and their experiences through a poem like this. You see how they have suffered from their fears and how they overcome it to live their life. It can be really inspirational to write about something that is so personal to another person.

I only hope that I can write something inspirational to another person. I hope that I will feel comfortable to talk about something so personal to me. As I continue to write I hope that one day I hold less and less back. I want to express my deepest feelings through writing. If I get to that point eventually, I will feel accomplished.
